Sing Like No One Can Hear You!!!

I thought it would be fun to post the words to the adorable songs the kids are learning each week. That way as parents we can sing right along with our little kindergartners!! So get out your singing voices and enjoy!

COLOR SONGS

Red
to the tune of Frere Jacques
(Are you Sleeping)
R-e-d red, r-e-d red
I can spell red,
I can spell red
Fire trucks are red
stop signs are red too
r-e-d, r-e-d

Blue
(To the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)
B-l-u-e spells blue,
b-l-u-e spells blue
Hi ho did you know,
b-l-u-e spells blue
The big sky is blue the ocean is too
hi ho did you know
b-l-u-e spells blue

Green
(To the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
G-r-e-e-n, g-r-e-e-n,
I know how to spell green,
g-r-e-e-n
Caterpillars are green and grasshoppers too
I know how to spell green, g-r-e-e-n

Number Songs

One
(To the tune of This Old Man)
O-n-e, that spells one
O-n-e spells number one
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine,
ten
O-n-e spell one again o-n-e,
that spells one
there is one moon and one sun the sun shines all day
and the moon comes out at night
one head, one bed, sweat dreams, sleep tight

Two
(To the tune of Do You Know the Muffin
Man)
T-w-o, that spells two
t-w-o spells number two
twins and pairs and doubles too
these things come in twos
t-w-o,
that spells two
t-w-o spells number two
two ears, two arms, two legs,
two shoes put them all together could this be you?

Three
(To the tune of Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley Grow)
t-h-r-e-e spells three
three triangles I can see
they have three sides and sail the sea
t-h-r-e-e spells three
t-h-r-e-e spells three,
three pigs, three bears, three mice
I see they're in the stories that we read
t-h-r-e-e spells three

Month Song
(to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle)
January is the first
February's heart might burst
March right on 'til April's here
May and June, you're halfway there
Lots of swimming in July
Don't let August pass you by
September sees the start of school
October can be very cool
Then November comes our way
In December we can say
One whole year has come and gone
Now we know our twelve month song.
(Thanks Lynn for sending them ♥Ü♥ )

Today you will find a “little blue bookshelf” in your child’s backpack. This is a fun way to collect all of your child’s self-made books. I’ve told the students to put their bookshelf somewhere safe and convenient, such as the mantle or on a shelf in the family room. Then, before bed each night or when visitors come over, they can pull out a book or two and ‘read’ it for all to admire. Of course, some of the kiddos may be reciting the books from memory, and not really reading the words, but this is a first step in the reading process. Feeling the success of ‘reading’ these books will build their self-esteem, and your enthusiasm for their new talent will encourage them to read even more. Once your child has established a place for their shelf, he/she can add the new books he/she brings home from school every week. Happy Reading!

Thank you to all of the parents who emailed me last week. If you haven’t already done so, please email me at my home and school email address this week. This will allow me to record your email address and allow me to send quick notes periodically. You can jot me a note or just write “email contact” in the subject line. I look forward to hearing from you!

Our class has a blog! Thank you to Abby’s mother, Cara, for designing and updating our blog. You can go to: http://www.growinginkindergarden.blogspot.com/ to view the Flanagan Forum, our daily specials, snack helpers, and more. Remember, that’s kindergarden with a ‘d’.

Our weekly parent volunteers will start this week. If you signed up to volunteer, a white sheet with your date and time was sent home on Friday in your child’s backpack.

We have had another wonderful week in kindergarten and I am still so impressed with what fun, polite, kind and hard-working kids you have. Kudos to you! We began to rotate through reading, language, art, and math/science centers last week and will continue with these rotations each week for the rest of the year. It is during this center time that I will use my weekly parent volunteers. (From 2:00-3:00 each day.) A sign-up sheet will be posted at Curriculum Night on Tuesday, and we will begin parent helpers next week. Speaking of Curriculum Night, ours will be held on Tuesday, August 19th at 5:00pm in our classroom. Please plan on at least one parent attending per child. I am sending home a Curriculum Night packet in today’s homework folder for you to read through prior to C.N. and I will answer any questions you have on Tuesday.
Thank you for sending your child’s homework folder in on Friday. I will continue to send the homework folder home on Mondays and will collect them on Fridays. I generally do not check the homework folders until Friday, so if you ever have a note for me that needs immediate attention, it is better to tape or pin it to your child’s shirt or backpack where I will see it, rather than putting it in the folder.
Parents have homework again this week! Please email me at my home and school email address this week. This will allow me to record your email address and allow me to send quick notes periodically. You can jot me a note or just write “email contact” in the subject line. I look forward to hearing from you!
I’d like to introduce our fantastic Instructional Assistant, Iris Rodriguez. Iris has been with me for two years and is an invaluable help in our classroom. She is studying pediatric nursing in college and has many years of experience with children. You will be seeing a lot of Iris this year as she works with and takes tender care of our kindergartners. Feel free to introduce yourself the next time you stop by the classroom.

Helpful Hint: My daughter Shaylee has been experimenting with an awesome website called http://www.starfall.com/ It helps reinforce skills learned in kindergarten. I have been very impressed with this site and wanted to share it with you. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Do you have a great educational website that you’d like to share with the other kinder-families? Email it to me and I will post it on the next Flanagan Forum.
